Into France

Moving right along…

I spent my last few days in Spain at the small and incredibly picturesque beach town of Cadaques:

More Cadaques:

And just like that, the whirlwind tour continues and I’m on to France. Met a nice French couple on the train who had walked the entire Costa Brava. They treated me to breakfast and I have an invitation to visit Toulouse the next time I’m in France… score!

On the train, I found out that Avignon (my intended destination) was packed for theatre festival season. So during a 30-minute layover just past the French border, I ran to an internet cafe, looked up places on Hostelworld.com to check for availability, then scribbled down some addresses, and got off the train a stop early at Nimes. And… it worked! Found a great hotel right in the center of town. I’m really playing with fate here. (I can’t remember if I mentioned my 10 hours of homelessness in Figueres?)

Anyway, in the center of Nimes there is a perfectly restored Roman theater, and on the night I arrived I noticed posters for a concert by “Superbus.” Naturally I attempted to bluff my way in. And to my surprise … success! (This was a 30 euro ticket!)

Quite a setting for a concert.

It turns out Superbus is a French pop group. It was - and I’m not ashamed to say it - AWESOME. Go ahead, wikipedia them so you can laugh at me. They claim to be the founders of “girl noise garage rock” and Blink-182 is listed as one of their influences.

Out into the night … with music on the streets, and an impromptu jam session on the sidewalk.
