Paris

It’s good to be back in Paris. There is something about this city that really is … well … magical. It’s a cliche because it’s true.

For example, this is what I saw my first night here. Those are bubbles in the air. BUBBLES!

Needing to dampen the mood somewhat, I visited the Catacombs, which were built after city residents complained about the stench coming from an aboveground mass grave. So the city officials transported piles of bones in the dead of night to these abandoned quarry tunnels, 100 feet below street level. When you walk through the tunnels, there are piles of stacked bones on either side. Creepy and fun.

Then, deciding that I wanted the magic back, I went to Montmartre. If any of you have seen Amelie, you’ll remember that it was set here. It’s full of tourists but still picturesque.

Montmartre’s Sacre Couer, my pick for best-looking cathedral in the world (that I’ve seen, at least):

A jazz band was playing on the steps in front. Typical!

Looking out on an incredible view of the city:

So yeah, Paris is great.

Yesterday I met a guy playing Irish fiddle on the street, and he told me about a session happening tonight. I’m going to busk beforehand on the Pont Neuf and then check it out. Will post here about how it all goes…
